Affordable healthcare is a human right, not a luxury. Every Iowan deserves the freedom to see a doctor, afford their medicine, and care for their family without going broke. Thanks to Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act, Iowa’s uninsured rate has dropped from over 12% in 2013 to just about 7.2% in 2023, placing us among the top states for access and affordability. Yet even with these improvements, many Iowans still face barriers—over the past 15 years, more than 250 healthcare facilities have closed, primarily in rural areas, leaving many counties without obstetric or primary care services.
By expanding access to affordable, comprehensive care, we can build a healthier, stronger Iowa—where no one has to choose between their health and their paycheck. Low-income children and families already rely on Medicaid and HAWK-i for essential care, mental health services, and preventive treatments; making coverage more accessible keeps families out of emergency rooms and reduces long-term costs. It’s not just about healthcare—it’s about freedom: the freedom to lead a full, productive life without fear of medical bills, the freedom to thrive in every Iowa community, and the freedom to build our future on a foundation of wellness—not worry.
